Waitemata Clinical Skills Centre

North Shore Hospital: Auckland

Value: $10m

Client: Waitemata District Health Board

The Project

Waitemata DHB employs approximately 3,500 staff on its North Shore campus. The project was for the development of a Conference, Learning and Research Centre on the North Shore Hospital site. This Centre provides a fit-for-purpose conference, learning and research facilities for Waitemata DHB staff and external users, and facilities for undergraduate students from tertiary institutes.  This will support Waitemata DHB’s in-service training requirements and assist in the retention of a qualified workforce. Furthermore, the Centre – which brings together clinical practitioners and tertiary education researchers – will enhance the academic profile of Waitemata DHB.

The new building accommodates:

  • Shared teaching spaces for Waitemata DHB (and tertiary partners)
  • A 250-seat auditorium
  • A simulation teaching laboratory
  • Office space for tertiary teaching institutions and Waitemata DHB / University joint appointments

Perficio were appointed as the Client Representative with a project management bias overseeing the project from inception to completion.  We were on the Steering Group and Project Control Group and involved in decision making.  Our role is to drive the project team and liaise with all parties both internally and externally to ensure good communication and stakeholder management.

Solutions and Outcomes

Carrying projects on a hospital site is challenging as consideration must be given to noise, disruption to services, patient experiences, traffic and time.  The solution to minimising and/or mitigating these issues is detailed planning during the early stages, even at Business Case level to ensure associate costs and time are captured.

Works were planned to minimise disruption to all people visiting the hospital campus.  Consideration to Traffic Management was a key aspect.

The use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been implemented and Perficio have provided the brief for its application and expectations.

The NZS3910: 2013 form of Building Contract has been used based on a fixed lump sum and a Schedule of Quantities.  We opted to schedule the works due to the market conditions at the time i.e. making it easier and faster for sub-contractors to price and respond.  Perficio put together the Contract in conjunction with the legal team.
